Seed pods of Seaweed with frost.
Photographed on a cold morning with frost. The beautifully shaped seed pods of Sea Wort get a nice rim of hoarfrost along the edges, accentuating the unusual shape.
Sawweed (Nicandra physalodes) is an annual plant in the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
The plant can grow from 0.3 to 2 m tall. The leaves are up to 30 cm long, ovate to oblong, and wavy toothed. The annual plant flowers from July to October. The plant produces a large number of flowers, each of which usually blooms for only a single day. The bell-shaped flowers are light blue to purple, white at the base and 3-4 cm in size. After flowering in the period from June to September, a lantern of sepals containing a fruit - a 15 mm large brown berry - develops, as in the true lantern plant.
Indeed, the seed capsules are like lanterns.
The seaweed is native to South America, especially Peru. Introduced to Europe, the plant is found in both Belgium and the Netherlands.
The plant repels flies.
