he rodent has arrived in Western Europe through importation as a non-native species also: Belgium,[1] the Netherlands,[1] Germany,[1] France, Italy,[1] Austria and Switzerland.[1]
Populations in Europe probably originated from escaped domestic animals. Near Tilburg, the animal escaped in the late twentieth century after the closure of the Tilburg Zoo, which was located in the forest complex southwest of Tilburg. A cage containing the animals fell off the wagon during the move, allowing them to break out.[source?] In the Netherlands, it occurs in North Brabant, near Tilburg in the Oude Warande and its surroundings.[4] It was also observed in Hooge Mierde in 2012.[5] In Belgium, there is a large population in the Sonian Forest near Brussels.
