US Air Force (USAF) B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was an American four-engine heavy long-range bomber. Designed by the Boeing company in the 1930s, the aircraft was originally intended for coastal patrols, but the design was modified as a result of the government order for a four-engine bomber. B-17s were widely deployed over both Europe and the Pacific during World War II. Because of its formidable and increasingly improved armament during its development, the aircraft was nicknamed Flying Fortress.
