Alexanderplatz in Berlin is one of the most famous sights of the city. it forms the center in the east of the city and is called "Alex" by the Berliners.
Until the middle of the 19th century it was used as a parade and drill ground by the military.
In the 1960s, while the GDR was still in power, it was redesigned and turned into a pedestrian zone.
It owes its name to the visit of Tsar Alexander I in 1805.
Today it is one of the most important hubs of Berlin, not only for tourists. It houses the famous World Time Clock, the Fountain of Friendship between Nations and the Berlin TV Tower. The image is also available in black and white.
