Big Ben, officially called Elizabeth Tower, is the iconic clock tower at the northern end of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. Although many call the entire structure Big Ben, that name actually refers to the Great Clock inside, which rings every hour. There are two common theories about the origin of the name Big Ben: the most likely is that the bell was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the First Commissioner of Works when it was cast. Another, less likely theory suggests that the name comes from the heavyweight boxing champion Benjamin Caunt. The tower, completed in 1859, is a prominent symbol of the United Kingdom and is known for its accuracy and the characteristic Westminster quarter beats, which have been broadcast by the BBC for decades. Its neo-Gothic design, by Augustus Pugin, and its steadfast presence on the Thames have made Big Ben a beloved landmark and a common image in views of London.
