Crocus is a genus of the lily family (Iridaceae), which includes 90 species. Approximately one third of these are autumn bloomers.
Crocuses are mainly native to the mountains around the Mediterranean. The largest number of species are native to the Balkans and Asia Minor, with the exception of Crocus vernus (L.) Hill, which is found as far away as Central Europe (Alps and Carpathians), and a few species such as Crocus alatavicus Semenova & Reg. and Crocus korolkowii Regel ex Maw, which are native to the mountains of Central Asia.
