About ‘Dead tree on the sinter flats’ by Marald Bes

A dead tree on the white mineral flats of Yellowstone, against a deep blue sky.

The trunk is still fully upright but has no bark and no leaves left. What remains are bare branches reaching up like a skeleton, with a few broken stubs halfway.

The ground around it is pale and grainy, a layer of deposited mineral that from a distance looks like snow or salt. Closer in you see it is cracked, with brown and yellow streaks through it and some dry grass along the bottom edge.

The sky is the second subject: saturated blue with white cumulus standing out sharply, cut flat along their bases.

On the horizon a row of living conifers, small and dark, and against them you see how far the flats run.

Hard and bright, without any softness. The sun is high and there is no shade to get into.

On a wall this is graphic and uncompromising: white, blue and one dark vertical. It suits clean interiors and works well as the only picture on an empty wall, where it gets its space.
