Desert Buzzard
This one lives in animal park Hoenderdaell, along with a few conspecifics.
The Desert Buzzard is found in the wild in the southwestern part of the US, Chile and Argentina.
What makes desert buzzards unique is their social behaviour. They live in family groups of 2 to 7 animals and hunt together, similar to a pack of wolves. The groups have a hierarchical structure with an adult dominant female at the top, followed by adult males and then previous years' young. The previous year's young stay with the parents, to observe and help feed the next year's litter of young.
Besides hunting together, desert buzzards also help each other build nests. No other raptors are known to help each other build nests as this species does.
The territory of a group is about 5 km2.
