About ‘Grey Day’ by Ellen Borggreve

The first thing that struck me on the utterly grey winter's day was the monochromatic nature of the landscape. This image hardly had any colour in it at all. The silhouettes of the oak trees in the grey and dense fog and their shapes adding to the melancholic mood of the day. It was so foggy actually that I had not noticed at all that I was surrounded by a huge group of wild boars which at one point made themselves known to me in a way that made me flee the scene and go back to the safety of my car as quickly as I could. I had mistaken them for bushes and heather, but when they started moving and making grumbling noises, I knew that these were most definitely not innocent little bushes. I am not very brave when it comes to wild boars, which is probably quite wise.

Ellen Borggreve is a landscape photographer and author of Woodscapes and Praxisbuch Wälder fotografieren, among others. She was born and raised in the woods of the Veluwe where her love for trees originated. Besides forests she also likes to photograph Dutch coastal scenes.

The focus is on tranquil scenes that seem to lie outside everyday reality, without people in the picture, with subjects that are about to disappear often being the subject. The fleeting patterns…
