Petten is said to have originated in 739. The name refers to three wells that were located on the spot. As early as 1388 there is talk of a sand dike between Petten and 't Oghe (Callantsoog). During the Sint-Elisabethflood of 1421 Petten was completely swept away, and the dune row was affected. In 1432 a dike was constructed behind the dunes and from 1506 active coastal defense took place, with pile caps of beams from Norway and Sweden and stone from Vilvoorde. Nevertheless, in 1625 more than 100 houses were washed away and the church of Petten was placed at about 20 meters from the beach and would remain there until 1701. In 1793 the construction of the Hondsbossche Zeewering was started, and between 1870 and 1877 - at the idea of dike grave Cornelis van Foreest - the Zeewering with basalt overlay was built. Since then the hinterland has been dry and safe.
The 'Palendorp' is a monument that symbolizes an old village that disappeared into the sea in 1792. This beautiful work of art consists of 160 poles ranging from six to twelve meters in height. The poles are in the shape of 10 houses and a church.
