The pier at Brooklyn Bridge Park is long gone, but the remaining poles make this view of Manhattan a classic.
Manhattan is an island and one of the five parts of New York. Manhattan has 1,620,867 inhabitants and an area of 87.5 km², of which 28.0 km² is water. It's like New York County (informal name: Manhattan County) a county of the state of New York.
The island of Manhattan is 21.5 km long and 3.7 km wide (at its widest point). It is connected by bridges and tunnels to New Jersey in the west, the Bronx in the northeast, Brooklyn and Queens (the neighborhoods on Long Island) in the east and south. The only direct connection to the fifth district of New York, Staten Island, is a ferry, which departs from The Battery. In the middle of the island lies the large Central Park. The island attracts many tourists.
Manhattan is known for its skyscrapers, the wide avenues, the many yellow taxis and the financial center Wall Street. The dense buildings with skyscrapers gave rise to the term Manhattanisation.
