About "Primal soil - Broken silence"

by Hans Kwaspen

About the artwork

Primal Ground is my ode to the moment when matter reveals itself-unsolicited, unadorned. In this work, I have captured a corrugated metal surface, in which rust stains and a powerful splash of red paint combine to form an unexpected composition. That red stream, like a scar or a gesture, breaks the silence of the grey and makes the image almost physical.

My inspiration comes from the mysticism of Meister Eckhart, who describes the primal ground as the origin of all images and words. While photographing, I did not feel like a maker, but a witness to a moment in which time, decay and chance combined to form a visual truth.

The atmosphere is raw and charged, but also hushed. In line with Aaron Siskind's abstract photography and the material sensibility of artists like Antoni Tàpies, I let the surface speak for itself. Not an illustration, but a skin-a place where impermanence becomes visible as beauty.

What makes this work special is the tension between control and surrender. As a work of art on the wall, it is not a decoration, but a visual anchor point-a place where the gaze lingers, where silence and intensity meet.
