A herd of young reindeer in Lapland. Reindeer are found in the wild in the taiga and tundra of northern Europe, northern Asia and North America. Domesticated long ago in Eurasia, the reindeer is still kept by the indigenous peoples of the boreal and arctic zones, including the Saami, Evenks, Nenets and Chukchi. They are kept for their meat, their skin, as draught animals, as riding animals and sometimes for their milk. Lapland or Samenland is the cultural region traditionally inhabited by the Sami. While the Sami have several languages of their own (the Sami languages), they do not have their own state. In fact, Lapland stretches across the northernmost part of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
