About "River Geul"

by Nop Briex

About the artwork

River Geul near Hurpesch. The Geul is 58 kilometres long and its total fall is about 250 metres. Former canalisations have been or are being lifted in 2010, allowing the river to follow its old course and meander naturally through the South Limburg landscape again. The Geul is fed by a large number of tributaries in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Along the Belgian part of the Geul are the villages of Eynatten, Hauset, Hergenrath, Kelmis, Moresnet, Plombières and Sippenaeken. In the Netherlands, the Geul flows past Epen, Mechelen, Partij (near Wittem), Wijlre, Schin op Geul, Valkenburg, Broekhem, Strabeek, Houthem, Geulhem, Meerssen, Rothem and Bunde.

The Geul valley south of Gulpen (upstream) has slopes on the east side towards the Vijlen Plateau and on the west side towards the Crapoel Plateau. The Geul valley downstream has slopes on the south side to the Plateau of Margraten, on the north side to the Central Plateau and on the east side to the Plateau of Ubachsberg.

The Dry Valley of Colmont makes an incision to the Geul Valley at Etenaken into the Plateau of Ubachsberg. Between Valkenburg aan de Geul and Eijsden-Margraten, another dry valley, the Gerendal, cuts into the Plateau of Margraten.
