The Spix's Macaw is extinct in the wild. The Brazilian government, together with some breeders, is trying to build up such a large population that it can be reintroduced into the wild. Currently there are about 90 Spix's Macaws in captivity. I was able to photograph this specimen exclusively in the breeding station of the Loro Parque Foundation on Tenerife.
It was about three months old at the time and was named "Yara" in honour of the Brazilian biologist who accompanied the reintroduction project for many years. You can recognise young animals by their white beak backs, which later turn black.
