A colourful texture has been applied to this photograph of the lightvessel XVII Gedser Rev which is now permanently moored in Nyhavn Harbour in Copenhagen, Denmark. The lightvessel was built in 1895 and in operation until 1972 when it was acquired by the Danish National Museum and is preserved as a museum ship. In the background you can just see the old Dutch-style town houses that line the harbour. A lightvessel acts as a lighthouse and are used in waters that are too deep or unsuitable for the construction of a lighthouse and are often permanently anchored. The first modern lightvessel was designed by Robert Hamblin in 1732 and was placed off a sandbank at the mouth of the River Thames in England. The most crucial element of the lightvessel is of course the mounting of the light in the tall mast and you can clearly see this in this image.
