In the 17th century, seven mills were built in Stompwijk near Leidschendam to grind the surrounding polders dry. The northernmost triad, consisting of three octagonal mills, was preserved and was in full operation until 1951. Today, these permanently occupied mills serve as reserve drainage for the Nieuwe Driemanspolder.
