About the artwork

Tallship B.A.P. Unión from Peru.

The B.A.P. Unión is the largest sailing ship in Latin America. Besides its primary role as a training ship for officers and cadets, the Unión also acts as a sailing ambassador, promoting Peru's rich culture and heritage around the world.

BAP Unión (BEV-161) is a training ship of the Peruvian Navy. The ship was built in 2012-2015 by Shipyard Marine Industrial Services of Peru.

It is a four-masted, steel-hulled, class A bark, composed of 38 steel modules. Some impressive numbers of this ship:
length (with bowsprit) 115.50 metres;
width 13.50 metres;
draft 6.50 metres;
air draft 53.50 metres;
displacement 3,200 tonnes;
speed 12 knots (22 km/h)
crew of 250 officers and trainees.

The ship's name honours a Peruvian corvette that participated in the first phase of the War in the Pacific from 1879-1883 as part of a naval squadron commanded by Miguel Grau, a hero of the Peruvian navy.

This photo was taken on 20 August 2025 along the North Sea Canal during the SAIL-IN Parade of SAIL Amsterdam 2025.
