The Opal’s Resting Place by Jacco van Son

This image was captured during an unforgettable sailing expedition through the remote fjords of Scoresby Sound in Greenland. After days of navigating past active glaciers and immense ice floes, we found a moment of absolute calm. The inspiration for this work was the serene, timeless tranquillity of a ship that has found shelter in the lee of the vast Arctic landscape.
In the foreground, the traditional two-masted schooner ‘Opal’ lies peacefully at anchor in the calm waters of the fjord. The wooden masts and the refined rigging stand out sharply against the jagged, layered rocks of the coastline directly behind the boat. On closer inspection, one discovers the layered nature of the landscape: the lower, brownish rock formations merge in the background into monumental, lead-grey mountain faces. The pointed, razor-sharp peaks of the rear mountain range pierce mystically through a dense blanket of low-hanging cloud, whilst a tuft of snow in a deep gorge betrays the icy setting. To the right, a solitary, small ice floe drifts on the water, subtly balancing the composition.
This work exudes a deep, melancholic tranquillity and an intense sense of security. The atmosphere is cool and there is a hint of harshness in the air, yet the Opal radiates an indomitable calm. It is a message of tranquillity; a safe haven in an untamed world.
