About ‘The Whale’ by Sarah Boyo

The tail of a humpback whale, rising majestically from the water; the white caps consist of a multitude of forget-me-not flowers, into which the whale dives. The inspiration for this artwork is the whale that became stranded off Timmendorfer Strand. Whilst discussions were taking place about how it should be put down, and after nobody had read my tweet on the matter, I wrote to a newspaper suggesting that the whale could be freed by removing sand. As a result, the whale was freed.
Later, amidst a row in which certain individuals prioritised their own self-promotion over the whale’s welfare, the whale died, despite initial hopes to the contrary.

The atmosphere of the image is nevertheless positive, as the whale symbolises all whales, and due to its size, majesty and empathy, it stands a cut above humankind; thus, the fluke in the image also appears as a living symbol, whilst the forget-me-not flowers, in their supposed mundanity, ubiquitous and part of nature that looks up to humankind, are imbued by the whale’s presence with a dynamism that expresses their beauty and humankind’s immediate closeness to nature.
It captures a moment that is rarely seen and lasts only for a brief instant. It also depicts a path: the whale dives into the water, passing through the forget-me-not flowers found by the side of the path where people walk. Without being a memorial, it conveys the freshness and grandeur of a natural world of which we, as humans, are a part, combining a sense of solemnity with a playful element.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
