Phoenicopterus is a genus of birds from the family flamingos (Phoenicopteridae).
The plumage of the common flamingo is predominantly white with some pink. The bird has an extremely long neck, a blunt, angled beak with a black tip, extremely long legs and short toes with flippers. The body length is 150 cm and the weight is up to 4 kg.
Ordinary flamingos search for food during the day, even when it's very hot. This food consists of insects, worms, crustaceans, microscopic algae and other green fodder. The bird is partly a migratory bird, which often hibernates in warmer regions.
The common flamingo is widespread in Africa and southwestern and southern Central Eurasia. They can be found in various freshwater and saltwater biotopes, especially in relatively shallow, salty lakes, estuaries and lagoons.
