Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city and the economic center of Vietnam. Under its old name Saigon, which is still used today in parallel with Ho Chi Minh City, it was the capital of the Republic of Vietnam until April 1975. After the withdrawal of US troops and the military defeat of the South Vietnamese government, the city was named in 1976 after the North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh, who died in 1969. In the administrative area of the city live 9 million inhabitants.
