I am fascinated every time I get a good look at the godwits. While making a film about meadow birds, I was often able to see them up close. The godwit is the king among meadow birds with its distinctive beak and is a truly Dutch bird as most godwits reside in this country.
The alarm call of black-tailed godwit's can be heard from afar. walking through the field during the breeding season yields plenty of these calling birds. That also means they have young and that is a good sign. that is why the allarm calls are often translated with success. The black-tailed godwit is a very vulnerable bird that needs lots of worms and insects. after all, survival success depends on it. The strange thing is when they leave for Africa they eat mostly travels and seeds.they find these in wetlands or at the edge on rice fields where crops have been harvested shortly before. Once back in the Netherlands, they switch to animal food just like them youngsters. They seem to do nothing but snatch flies from the stalks and flowers.
