Photographing droplets colliding is done with a special tube filled with liquid. Attached to the tube is a small device that releases drops and can be set to milliseconds. So you can drop a drop and have the camera take the picture a few milliseconds later, just when the drop hits the tile. This creates beautiful formations. The nice thing is that you never know beforehand exactly what the result will be. The liquid consists of water mixed with some milk and food colouring.
