We are cycling across the island when a sign appears saying: turtles on the road. Enthusiastically, we move on and after only a few minutes we come across our first wild Galapagos tortoise! He or she is walking in the middle of the road and I get a great opportunity to take some portraits of this majestic animal.
There used to be 15 subspecies of giant tortoises in the Galapagos archipelago. Each adapted to its own specific environment. They are the largest turtles and the longest-lived animals in the world. Today, 11 subspecies remain and the oldest known one has been alive for more than 170 years.
