The labrador retriever or simply labrador is a dog breed that descends from the St. John's dog. That breed was crossed with a number of other breeds, such as the gordon setter, the spaniel, the flatcoated retriever and the Chesapeake Bay retriever, starting in England in the mid-19th century.
The St. Johns dog was used in Newfoundland for fishing, the labrador was bred in England specifically for duck hunting in swampy areas. The retriever even has flippers between his toes. source wikipedia
