I had set aside one day to photograph in the Beemster. Out early, camera along, looking for that characteristic Dutch landscape. And it was lucky: a bright sunrise, a little mist over the land, and a field full of wild flowers with the windmills in the background completing the picture.
The sky was beautiful, clear, with a few well-formed clouds that caught the light nicely and gave the image extra depth. In the meadow walked a few sheep, grazing quietly. They gave the landscape just that little bit of life, without disturbing the composition.
I built the image with attention to balance: flowers in the foreground, the windmills as a recognizable background, and the sheep as a subtle addition. The sun was low, so the light fell warmly and softly over the landscape. Everything stood still, and the moment was just right.
At home at my desk, I worked on the shot further. As always, I take my time with that: colour correction, contrast, and fine-tuning the details so that the image conveys exactly the atmosphere I felt there.
The result is a typical Dutch landscape, captured in a moment of calm and clarity. A morning in the Beemster that shows how beautiful simplicity can be.
