Cityscape of Haarlem, seen from the Vissersbocht on a quiet winter evening.
There is something timeless about this spot on the Spaarne. From the Vissersbocht, you look out over the water towards the city's historic facades, with the warm glow of the setting sun setting the scene in a soft hue. It was windless, the sky was outlined in subtle colors, and the water was mirror-smooth.
In the center of the picture is the three-masted Souverein, quietly moored. The ship adds character to the image, a stately appearance that fits perfectly in this tranquil setting. The reflection in the water makes the image almost symmetrical, and the combination of architecture, shipping and light creates a composition that radiates tranquillity.
I deliberately chose a wide frame in which the city, the ship and the sky come together. No people, no movement, all attention goes to the lines, rhythm and atmosphere of the moment.
At home, I fleshed out the image with attention to colour, contrast and detail, so that the shot retains that winter stillness. The result is a portrait of Haarlem as I know it: subdued, full of character and history.
