About "Towards the sun"

by Thomas Riess

About the artwork

Towards the sun at Frankfurt's main cemetery. The main cemetery in Frankfurt am Main was opened in 1828. It is located on Eckenheimer Landstraße and, together with the two directly neighbouring Jewish cemeteries, forms one of the largest cemetery complexes in Germany. Its monumental portal buildings and garden architecture, funerary monuments dating back over 180 years and the graves of numerous important personalities make it a collection of historical, artistic and human traces in Frankfurt am Main. Since the beginning of the 16th century, most of the city's dead have been buried in St Peter's Churchyard in the Neustadt district. After the introduction of the Reformation, St Peter's Churchyard was reserved for the Protestant dead of the Old Town and the New Town; Sachsenhausen had its own cemetery. The old Jewish cemetery belonged to the Judengasse area, the Jewish ghetto, while the few Catholic dead were buried in the churchyard belonging to the cathedral. (Source: WIKIPEDIA)
