Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) lived in Nuenen from 1883 to 1885. He worked on a number of paintings of windmills during this period. In 1884, for example, he painted the Collse watermill which he passed on his way from Nuenen to Eindhoven. He used warm tints in the landscape for the first time. The painting was auctioned in 1966 and came into private ownership for Dfl 95,000. In 2003 it was part of the LeFrak collection in the United States. The North Brabant Museum purchased the painting in 2017 for Fl. 3 million at Sotheby's auction in America. The mill is on the national monument list.
