The Cooltoren, 154 meters high, is a new addition to Rotterdam's skyline. A new addition? You wouldn't say so when you see this old postcard with those historic sailing ships in the Bierhaven in the foreground. You would almost think that this Cooltoren has been there for a hundred years.
Therefore, this is not a real "vintage" postcard, but an artificially aged recent photograph. Besides the sailing ships, another historical object can be spotted on it: the grain elevator, far right, in the museum harbor of the Maritime Outdoor Museum.
The housing behind it, on the Schiedamsedijk, is of more recent date: the 1950s. The houses on the far left are even newer: the 1980s. And the Bierhaven itself is also less than a hundred years old; this branch of the Leuvehaven was created in the reconstruction period after World War II.
A sign of the modern era, the Cooltoren is also known in fashionable English as the Cool Tower. Although "cool" in itself does apply to the architecture, that has nothing to do with the tower's name. That refers to the neighborhood in which the building stands: Cool. After which, by the way, also Coolsingel boulevard is named.
