Shot of the Binnenhof in The Hague, captured in black and white.
For this photo, I deliberately went to The Hague with one aim: to photograph the Binnenhof in a peaceful, tranquil setting. This place breathes history, and I wanted to reflect that in the composition. The choice for black-and-white was an easy one, as it strengthens the lines, the reflections and the atmosphere of the moment.
I had set up my camera at the edge of the Hofvijver, overlooking the complex. The sky was overcast, which provided a nice contrast and depth to the image. The water was still, making the reflection of the buildings almost mirror-like. In the foreground, you can see the fencing and a bench, elements that anchor the image and give it a sense of presence.
The composition is clean and balanced: architecture, water, sky and foreground together form a powerful whole. No people in the picture, no distractions-all attention goes to the shapes and history this place exudes.
At home, I developed the shot further. Contrast, sharpness and tonality were carefully tuned to give the image that classic look. The result is a timeless portrait of an iconic spot in the Netherlands.
